GABRIELLE COURTENAY

Colliding Worlds

Gallery 1 until 19 November 2011
** Finalist in the 2011 Charlatan Ink Prize, New York
In her exhibition Colliding Worlds, Gabrielle Courtenay stage-manages a sensitive balance between sensuality, intellect and emotion. She draws the viewer in close to her shaped canvases, some round and arranged in clusters, as if to inveigle us on a treasure hunt.  The images and objects in this exhibition present a fusion of Courtenay’s past and present themes: memory, cultural histories, feminine space, self in landscape, architecture, and, of course, observations about art and the painter’s historical dance between figuration and abstraction.
