PAMELA RATAJ

Netz

RATAJ's works examine the capacity of language to both mask and to reveal the objects it names, the arbitrary significance of naming, and language as a structure that largely determines the way we think, feel and see. The seven paintings in the Netz series begin with a minimal spacial division which becomes increasingly fragmented and partial as the series evolves. The sculptural works of glass, wax and leather overlap, twist and bend to create distance, movement and random connections.

RATAJ states, "Netz extends my investigations into the elements that determine our perception to explore language as one such delimiting structure. These explorations have greatly enriched my practice, deepening my understanding of the vital importance of first language to identity, and the extent to which its loss contributes to a sense of displacement and isolation."
